Fortran’s Connected Vehicle Signal Priority Project is awarded as one of the most transformative smart projects of the year by Smart 50 Awards. Fortran Traffic Systems, in partnership with the Region of Durham and the Region of Waterloo, developed and implemented a cutting edge Connected Vehicle Signal Priority System. A Signal Priority System reduces the vehicle dwell time at a traffic control signal by optimizing the signal timing, in real-time, and providing priority to the vehicle. By reducing transit travel times the system is particularly advantageous to transit vehicles. This results in increased schedule reliability, increase in ridership and customer satisfaction, decrease in capital cost and running maintenance costs and reduces energy consumption and vehicular emissions.
In this project, a central Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) platform was developed and deployed. The platform communicates signal timing and traveller information messages to the vehicles through LTE or DSRC/C-V2X communication. Moreover, the platform provides Transit Signal Priority through V2I communication. Fortran’s Connected Vehicle Signal Priority System substantially reduces the cost of implementation for the cities and reduces the travel time of the transit buses on average by 10%. The pilot project demonstration, achieved a 17% improvement in travel time, through a signalized intersection.
For a city, such as the City of Toronto, Fortran’s solution can provide a $50 million cost-saving and a $2.6 billion time saving for passengers over a ten-year life cycle. Moreover, this solution reduces GHG emissions by 40-kilo tonnes annually. This project was funded by OCE AVIN and NRC-IRAP.
